Counselling for Couples and Individuals

Hello, my name is Janine Knight.  Welcome!  I am an experienced Relate qualified and BACP registered (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists)  Relationship Counsellor  experienced in working with a diverse range of issues.  If you are living in a relationship that does not feel right, struggling to reach compromises, resolve conflict or constantly trying to suppress your feelings of unhappiness, relationship counselling could help.  You may be dealing with a betrayal, with illness or depression, or any major life event that is impacting on how you relate to your partner.  My approach is caring and empathetic, this means that I am not here to judge you, but rather to enable you both to understand your relationship better and work through the issues that are troubling you.  I do this by creating a trusting, therapeutic relationship to enable you to gain new understanding and insights around what is not working in your life.

Why choose me as your counsellor?

  • Relationship therapy is my specialist area

  • I am passionate about what I do!

  • People say I put them at ease allowing them to relax and engage in the counselling

  • I understand how hard it can be to take that first step and start to open up to a stranger about personal details in your life

  • I am an experienced communicator

  • My communication style is friendly, relatable and down to earth!

  • I have worked with and welcome all types of relationships, including different ages, sexualities, genders and cultural backgrounds.  To find out how I can help you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

How I Work

Counselling is about creating a caring space where you can explore, without fear, the problems that have arisen in your life and relationships. I will provide you with a safe, confidential space where you can share your thoughts and feelings about each other in a structured and meaningful way. We will start by exploring what you want from therapy and what help is needed to understand each other better and make the relationship work better. Or perhaps you have decided to separate and need help to do so more amicably.  You may not know what you want - that's ok, I will help you find clarity.

Relationships are dynamic and require work to remain healthy.  We don't always know how to do that, particularly when problems arise. Couples counselling helps you to gain new emotional tools to navigate the next chapter in your lives more positively.

Together we will explore how individual patterns of behaviour might be negatively impacting your relationship. This is because people are often unaware of how their reactions affect their partner. Couples often report having the same arguments over and over again without understanding their own role in this dynamic.

By identifying unhelpful behaviour such as criticism, blame or shutting down, couples can gain insight into each others' responses and where they come from. This can be a vital aspect of improving communication.

Testimonials

"I just want to say thank you so much again for all your help over the past year, we are so grateful for all the help you have given us.  You really did go above & beyond in our sessions and we definitely didn't give you an easy job sometimes!  We both felt so heard, validated and challenged (when needed) and it really felt you had out best interests at heart at all times.  I personally found the process incredibly healing and we have both learned so much and our relationship feels so much healthier and happier.  The impact that your work has had on us as a family has been huge and we feel so much better equipped to provide a happy, stable environment for our child.  We feel so much more connected and authentic than we ever have and I'm so grateful to you for believing in us.  We will really miss the sessions and you are a credit to the world of relationship counselling"

"Janine is a wonderful counsellor with years of experience - she has helped us though many difficult periods where we were finding it hard to work out how to move forward.  She has gotten to know us personally and is able to bring us back to what is important to us and to what patterns we may be falling into as well as give us the tools to deal with it.  We lean on her as and when we find we could benefit from her guidance, and trust her competely!  recommended to anyone seeking couples counselling."

About Me

Formerly a Registered Midwife working within the NHS, I have a long standing passion for caring for people.  I was always very drawn to the psychological aspects of care and enjoyed talking to and understanding people's experiences, often providing support following trauma.  My midwifery experience gave me so many useful skills to bring to my role as a counsellor.  I am a calm and positive person and have found it a real privilege to support women and their partners through pregnancy and birth. I now feel the same sense of privilege supporting people through difficult times in their relationships and their life.
